Why do I need to be flexible as well as fit and strong?
Answer: Flexibility exercises provide additional mobility to your joints. Imagine two straight steel rods each about 1 foot (300mm) long, with one end of each rod joined together by a hinge. Individually these rods are very strong, but if they need to work together as one unit, their combined strength is limited by the strength and mobility of the hinged joint. If that hinge is rusted or corroded the combined strength of those two rods is dramatically reduced. However, if the hinged joint is well looked after, oiled regularly, with the two rods having been carefully moved through a good range of motion on a regular basis, those rods then form a very strong unit.

Flexibility exercises, correctly performed, “oil” your joints assisting to keep your joints, tendons and muscles strong and fully functional throughout your life.

If you are a sports person then optimum joint and muscle flexibility will allow your muscles to effectively function over a greater range of motion. This means you will be able to throw further, hit harder, swing, walk and run faster, while minimizing the likelihood of injury.

How many minutes a day do I need to exercise?
Answer: There is no right answer to this question. Before we provide our views on this, we think you need to first ask yourself, “Why do I want to exercise?” In our introduction to the FlexibilityPlus system we discuss the need to set a meaningful goal that underpins why you are exercising. If you are a person who hasn’t exercised for years, and make a commitment to exercise 2 minutes a day and keep that commitment for two months, you are on your way to making huge progress. Why? Because you can then increase that commitment to 4 minutes a day for another two months, then to 8 minutes a day, and so on.

What you need to do when you decide to follow an exercise program is to:

  1. Set a meaningful goal for you
  2. Work out where you are currently positioned in relation to that goal
  3. Decide what exercises you can comfortably perform in a time that suits you
  4. Determine how you can gradually increase your exercise workout in an enjoyable manner so you feel an increased sense of flexibility, fitness, strength and well-being.

When you are exercising around 15 minutes a day, you will be starting to feel much better within yourself.

If you are competitive athlete reading this question, your training maybe one to three hours a day. That fact doesn’t take away the basic principles of the need for you to set goals and to continue measuring your improvements to ensure you attain your goals.

If I am over 50 years old can I follow the FlexibilityPlus exercise system?

Do I need special equipment to follow the FlexibilityPlus exercise system?
Answer: You can successfully follow the flexibility exercise program of the Flexibilityplus system without the need for any special equipment.
However, a fitness ball will be necessary if you want to build your core strength using our system of core strength training. These can be purchased from most fitness equipment suppliers at a reasonable cost.
If you want to follow the weight resistance strength training programs you will also need to purchase either some dumbbells or a barbell set.

Why can’t I just exercise and eat whatever I want?
Answer: You can if that is all you want to do. But, if you want to get the most benefit from the exercises you are doing you need to put the right fuel in. If you have a high performance car the only way to keep it performing well is to give it the right tune up and service and ensure you pour in the right water, oil and fuel. The same is true of your body. If you put diesel in a petrol engine you will eventually destroy the engine, or it just won’t work, no matter how well it has been engineered, built, serviced and tuned up!
On the other hand, when the right fuel is put in and all the other tasks have been correctly carried out, you’ll have a high performance vehicle that performs at its best over a prolonged period.

Eating a wide range of whole foods at close to their natural state, will provide your body with the right nutrients which are the building blocks for creating a strong healthy body through exercise.

Exercise places demands on your entire system. To build and repair your body requires good quality protein and minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc, to name a few. Antioxidants are also necessary to mop up the free radicals produced as a bi-product of exercise. Good quality oils assist in lubricating your joints, keeping to the minimum any potential wear and tear, while Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) found in certain oils protect the brain and nerves with water hydrating the tissues which helps to remove lactic acid waste that is produced during certain types of exercise.
